Course Overview

Experimental Handbuilding: Form and Surface is a dynamic workshop that explores slab building and a variety of surface embellishment techniques using terracotta clay. The emphasis is on developing experimental slab forms with an orientation towards vessel structures. Julie Bartholomew provides demonstrations of slab construction and surface treatment techniques including brushwork, underglaze and slip application, mono print release, tissue transfer, sgraffito, stamping, sprigging and slip trailing. The workshop encourages the integration of two-dimensional surface techniques with innovative three-dimensional slab forms.

All clay and materials for surface treatment are provided. Selected pieces will be bisque fired in the NAS kilns after the workshop, and we will notify you when they are ready for pick up. Glazing courses are available in other short courses programs.
