Course Overview

This series of four lectures explores the ideas, histories, and practices of LGBTIQA+ artists. Each session begins with a lecture, followed by a discussion that engages the students with each topic. Week Two: A history of Gay and Lesbian art

Reading: Sally Gray, ‘America and the Queer diaspora: The case of David McDiarmid’

 

Week Three: Transgender art and culture

Reading: Transgender Studies Quarterly reviews of Katie Herzog’s exhibition ‘Transtextuality’

 

Week Four: Queer Indigenous art

Reading: ‘Saving Lives: Mapping the Power of LGBTIQ+ First Nations Creative Artists’

*Short courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. For students under 16 years of age there are School Holiday Workshops, Art Club and other youth art programs.

Lecturer Profile

Dr Christine Dean is an artist and theorist who specializes in exploring the rapidly evolving development of genders and sexualities in contemporary culture. Although the study of LGBTIQA+ art is relatively recent this course explores ancient and non-western approaches to gender expression and art in a global context.
