Course Overview

Develop your wheel throwing skills and discover the language and form of clay, using foundational and advanced techniques. Explore the structures, movements and creative possibilities of shaping clay into aesthetically pleasing pieces, while expanding your throwing abilities. Joe Purtle gives group demonstrations, as well as one-to-one tuition, sharing his expertise and knowledge of creative wheel forming.

The course is open to students with prior experience in ceramics, particularly those with an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency. All clay materials are supplied.

Selected pieces will be fired in the NAS kilns after the workshop. Please note, it may take up to four weeks after your course ends for works to be available for collection. We will notify you when they are ready for pick up.

* The course fee accommodates a limited class size, fostering a more personal learning experience. The course fee also incorporates the cost for materials such as clay.

* The workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced students over the age of 18.

* The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over.

Lecturer Profile

Joseph Purtle’s practice focuses on wheelthrowing and expressive high-temperature glazes, exploring variations in the firing atmospheres of gas and wood kilns.

He was the winner of the FONAS award, the Kerrie Lowe Gallery Award and the Ashley Dawson-Damer Award for Excellence in Ceramics. He has exhibited at Kerrie Lowe Gallery, Mils Gallery, Rex-Livingston Art + Objects, and the Sogetsu ikebana exhibition at the Botanic Gardens. Joe works full-time in the Ceramics Department at NAS.

Art Materials

Students must supply their own art materials, please refer to the list below. 

  • Towel and protective clothes (old shirt or apron) 
  • Notebook and pencils/pens 
  • Any ceramics tools that you may already have 
  • All clay and other materials are provided 
  • Enclosed footwear is essential in all studios on campus.
