Course Overview

Explore the art of collage and learn the practices of cutting and composition with award-winning artist Deborah Kelly. During this full weekend workshop, you’ll learn to play purposefully with pictures and develop a range of technical skills to create original artworks, developing new imagery from historical materials.

Delivered with technical demonstrations, discussion and storytelling, Kelly will guide you to reimagine and deconstruct the past in playful and poignant ways. This workshop will facilitate the art of turning history on its head with bold and beautiful revisions, resistances and reinterpretations.

* NAS Short Courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over. 

* Drawing and painting short courses may be held in upstairs studios. If access to stairs is not suitable, please contact us at short.courses@nas.edu.au

Lecturer Profile

Deborah Kelly is known for multi-disciplinary, exuberant artworks enlivened through workshops, events and performances. She has contributed to the Biennales of Singapore, Venice, Thessaloniki and Sydney, and the Asia-Pacific Triennial, QAGOMA. Her kaleidoscopic collage animation work The Gods of Tiny Things featured at ACMI in 2021, and CREATION showed at the Sydney Opera House and the MCA, 2021-2022. Most recently Kelly’s work has been seen in her animation survey at Maitland Art Gallery, 2022; in Braving Time at NAS Gallery, 2023; Toulouse Video Festival, France, 2023; at the National Portrait Gallery and in the permanent exhibition Being Human at the Wellcome Collection, London.

Art Materials

Students must supply their own art materials, please refer to the list below.

  • Smooth art paper, 2-3 sheets, around A3 size, at least 300gsm
  • Reference books: art books, magazines, journals with images to cut up, those with matte paper are perfect (colour and black & white). Damaged images are excellent to work with, but thin or shiny paper is hard to use, so please choose carefully.
  • Cutting mats, glue, brushes and blades are provided.

Deborah Kelly will provide a selection of vintage imagery from her personal archives.

Enclosed footwear is essential in all studios on campus.
