Contemporary Printmaking for Beginners

Explore a range of traditional and non-traditional printmaking processes including relief printing, intaglio etching and image transfer techniques. Annabelle McEwen will introduce you to traditional, contemporary and experimental approaches to printmaking, including some that can be practised in your own home studio. Learn to integrate different processes such as stencilling, layering, chine collé, frottage, image transfers and embossing. Annabelle instructs you with all the technical information you’ll need to learn about printing materials, surfaces, methodologies and how to edit your own print run.

This course is designed for students with limited experience of printmaking techniques, who want to begin their journey into an exciting and challenging artform, and develop their skill set in the medium in a fun and supportive studio environment.

*NAS Short Courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over.

Annabelle McEwen is a multidisciplinary artist practising on unceded Gadigal Land (Eora/Sydney) with a Master of Fine Art majoring in printmaking from The National Art School. McEwen works in
printmaking to explore the impact of corrupted-agency in digitally mediated experiences, and the paralleling pervasive virtual gaze on the body. Her work has featured in many exhibitions, recently including DISRUPTION PRINT FOILO at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand, Sydney Contemporary with The National Art School, The Mullins Conceptual
Photography Prize, Disruption: Discourse and Exchange at 16albermarle, Edition Four at Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios and BLACKBOX at Schmick Contemporary. McEwen was recently published with their article Image Transfer and The Virtual Gaze in The Print Council of Australia’s
IMPRINT Magazine. Her work has been acquired by The National Art School and The City of Sydney Art Collection among others. McEwen has written and
delivered workshops and classes at numerous institutions including The National Art School, UNSW Art and Design, Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios, Bankstown Arts Centre, 16 albermarle project space and Ravenswood School for Girls.

Students must supply their own art materials, please refer to the list below.

• Ideas – such as drawings, photos, images, maps, diagrams, text, books, or any kind of prompt for content for class projects
• A4 Visual Diary or sketchbook
• Drawing media – range of pencils and pens etc
• Protective clothing – old shirt or apron, covered footwear
• P2 masks
• Box of Nitrile gloves
• Silk Cut Lino block - Approximately 15 x 15 cm – one per student

Important: Throughout the course you may be required to purchase printing papers, and some other materials, which are available from Parkers and most other art suppliers. Annabelle will discuss the various plates and papers during your first class. The National Art School will supply all printing inks and other necessary equipment.
