Course Overview

Unlock the power of expression through drawing, learn to see the world differently and discover how lines, shapes, textures, light, shadow and perspective can convey mood and narratives.
Explore the realm of representational drawing, observing the space around you with a keen eye, experimenting with graphite and charcoal, to ink and pastels. Learn how small, quick, thumbnail sketches can serve as powerful tools for planning your compositions and capturing the essence of a subject, as well as developing concepts and compositions in your artworks. Pollyxenia Joannou
teaches you to embrace experimentation in your drawing process, to infuse your artworks with emotions and energy, capturing the atmospheric
possibilities of drawing.

Lecturer Profile

Pollyxenia Joannou is an artist with over 30 years’ experience in teaching drawing, in particular, general and experimental courses. Her work draws on inspiration from the world we live in, the
city and our place in it. She holds a
Master of Art in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, London, a Bachelor of Visual Arts from College of Fine Arts, UNSW, and a Certificate of Art from East Sydney Technical College. Pollyxenia has been exhibiting since 1982 and has been the recipient of numerous art awards and residencies. Inclusion in various institutional and private collections in Australasia, Europe, Hong Kong and the UK.

Art Materials

1 x sketchbook - any size from A5, A4 or A3

5 x sheets A1 cartridge paper

Charcoals – one packet of “willow” charcoal and 2 “compressed” charcoal pencils

Soft pastels or a set of oil pastels

1 x bottle black ink - medium to large size

1 can of aerosol fixative

1 x plastic eraser

3 x soft graphite pencils - 2B, 4B and 6B.

2 x bristle and soft brushes

Enclosed shoes are essential.
