Course Overview

This exciting course combines the fundamentals of drawing with an emphasis on developing your powers of observation, improving your technical skills, and the satisfaction of creating original artworks from real-life.

Maryanne Wick gives demonstrations in drawing, leads discussions about Australian and international artists, sets group exercises and provides detailed feedback about your work.  All in a supportive and friendly studio environment.

*NAS Short Courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over.

*Drawing and painting short courses may
be held in upstairs studios. If access to stairs is not suitable, please contact NAS Short Courses Administration at short.courses@nas.edu.au

Lecturer Profile

Maryanne Wick is a graduate and lecturer at the National Art School. Primarily known for her painting, drawing, print making and collage, she has lived, worked, and held solo exhibitions in Sydney, London, South Korea, Hong Kong and in Spain.  Her work is held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas. Maryanne has been a finalist in numerous awards, including the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the
Doug Moran and Portia Geach Portrait Prizes, the Gallipoli Art Prize and the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award. In 2015, she was awarded the Korea-Australia Art Foundation Prize for painting and, in 2022, was invited to participate in the prestigious Kedumba
Drawing Award. In 2023, Maryanne received the Macarthur Award for painting at the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award.

Art Materials

Materials List

  • 1 x A4 size drawing diary (white, acid free paper)
  • 2 x A1 size sheets of white drawing paper, acid free (suggest higher grade)
  • 3 x large pieces of brown craft paper (no butcher’s paper please - large brown craft paper can be purchased on campus)
  • 2 x lead pencils (your choice of grade - suggest 2B or 4B) or a graphite stick.  
  • 1 box of thick charcoal, (suggest Willow, avoid compressed charcoal)
  • 1 x small box of soft or oil colour pastels (your choice). Include the primary colours and white.
  • 1 x hard gum eraser and 1 x soft eraser (eg, Bruynzeel, Faber Castel or Belgrave)
  • A selection of rags, 1 x roll of white paper masking tape, a pair of scissors
  • 1 x can of fixative, ozone friendly, for fixing pencil, pastel, charcoal (optional)

On Day 1 of the course, please bring your drawing diary, lead pencils, erasers, masking tape.
