Course Overview

Explore the art of monoprinting in this comprehensive 2-day workshop, where you'll master the creation of original prints using stencils and drawing techniques, with a variety of textured materials. Delve into the nuances of layering, printing, and colour processes to produce unique and dynamic prints.

Janet Parker-Smith teaches you how to expand your creations by integrating them with simple and effective bookbinding techniques, including the construction of single-signature soft and hardcover books, as well as Japanese binding methods. This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of essential bookmaking skills, including precise folding, meticulous sewing, and careful cutting, empowering you to produce beautifully bound, personalized books.

* NAS Short Courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over.

Lecturer Profile

Janet Parker-Smith is a Sydney-based artist whose practice incorporates print media, small sculptural forms, collage and altered books. She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 25 years. Janet has had several solo exhibitions and selected as a finalist in many art award exhibitions. Her work is collected by the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Victoria and numerous other public and private collections.
Janet works as a sessional teacher at the National Art School and Sydney College of the Arts, as well as in Public Programs at NAS. She also works as an Arts Worker for councils across Sydney on different art projects and programs. Janet has been supported and represented by Van Rensberg Galleries in Hong Kong, May Space and M. Contemporary in Sydney.

Art Materials

Students must supply their own art materials, please refer to the list below.

  • Pencil, ruler, rubber, notebook/sketchbook
  • Apron and gloves 
  • 4 x sheets of rag paper – options: Fabriano, BFK Rives, Hahnemuhle (56 x 76cm) -white or off white. 
  • 3 x sheets of cartridge paper for proofing 
  • Other 2-dimensional materials for using in the monoprinting technique, e.g, dried leaves and flowers, lace, textured fabrics, mesh 
  • Enclosed footwear is essential in all studios on campus.
