Course Overview

The Art Club Workshops for High School students are designed to enhance and extend students’ technical, conceptual, and intellectual skills under the direction of experienced artists, through intensive practical study in the disciplines offered at NAS as well as engaging in an experience of NAS studios and campus. Students will develop their skill sets whilst investigating a variety of media and techniques. Each term is based on a separate discipline.

Lecturer Profile

Luke Thurgate is an artist and educator that currently lives and works on Gadigal Land (Sydney). He teaches in the BFA program at the National Art School where he is a Master of Fine Art alumni in drawing. Luke has previously worked in public programming and education roles at Adelaide Central School of Art, Art Gallery of South Australia, and Newcastle Art Gallery. Luke has had numerous solo and group exhibitions and has recently been a finalist in the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, the Dobell Drawing Prize and the Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture. Luke is represented in NSW by .M Contemporary.

Liss Finney, is an Australian artist and educator living and working between Awabakal Country in Newcastle and Gadigal Land, Sydney, NSW. Her practice spans painting, installation, and sculpture. She is currently a resident studio artist at The Creator Incubator, and has paintings with Stella Downer Gallery Sydney, and Leighton Contemporary Gallery, QLD. Liss has a background in Scientific Illustration, holding a Bachelor Degree with Distinction in Natural History Illustration from the University of Newcastle, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, majoring in painting. Liss has exhibited across NSW, most recently her work was awarded Highly commended in the Lake Art Prize, and won the 2021 Hawkesbury Art Prize Packers Prize. Liss has been a finalist in the 2022 Newcastle Club Art Prize, The 2022 Brenda Clouten Art Scholarship, 2021 and 2023 National Emerging Art Prize, 2021 Gosford Art Prize, 2021 Little Things Art Prize and the 2020 Blake Prize. Currently Liss is undertaking her Masters (Sculpture) at the National Art School.
